Key Takeaways
- 01The ECB says any decision to issue a digital euro depends on adoption of the digital-euro regulation.
- 02The digital euro would be central-bank money issued within the Eurosystem, rather than a privately issued stablecoin.
- 03The ECB’s 17 August 2026 FAQs indicate that no issuance decision has yet been made.
The European Central Bank’s digital-euro FAQs, updated on 17 August 2026, say that the ECB will decide whether to issue a digital euro only after the EU’s proposed digital-euro regulation has been adopted.
The ECB presents the digital euro as a digital form of central-bank money. It would therefore differ from private stablecoins, which are issued by private companies rather than a central bank.
The practical significance is that the project remains contingent on the EU legislative process. The FAQs do not indicate that a digital euro has already been approved for issuance or set an issuance date.
